The Sweet Dreams Shelter located at 1623 Convention Street in Baton Rouge provides shelter for single women and women with children in need of a safe place while attempting to gain independence.

Manna Givers are the lifeblood of the shelters. We are so very grateful to the individuals and groups that take their valuable time and resources to purchase or prepare a delicious meal for the participants in the shelters. Participants are heartened that strangers are willing to go to great lengths to sustain them in such a generous and loving way.

Manna Givers are asked to prepare a meal that includes a meat, vegetable and a starch. Desserts and beverages are optional and we provide the paper goods. We encourage you to stay and serve the meal to the participants and have fellowship with them. If you choose to do this, please bring enough food for your volunteers to enjoy as well.

We would like to limit the number of volunteers to ten. Minors MUST be accompanied by an adult to volunteer. A minor volunteer waiver must be printed, signed and brought with you on the day you volunteer. A group of six minors may be accompanied by an adult that is certified to work around vulnerable populations. Enter the Dining Room parking lot that faces Florida Boulevard and is surrounded by a black wrought iron fence. There is one door accessible from that parking lot. Drive to the door and knock on it. The meal will be retrieved. PLEASE LABEL THE MEAL FOR SWEET DREAMS UPSTAIRS GUESTS.

The Night Manager for Sweet Dreams will come with a cart to retrieve the meal. If you are staying to serve the meal, you should park behind the pharmacy on the circular drive close to the black wrought iron gate. Whether dropping off the meal or staying to serve the meal, you should phone the Night Manager to tell them you are on the premises so that they can come with a cart and assist you with the meal. You can call Ms. DaKasha Leonard at 512-297-0865, to reach the night manager on duty.

St. Vincent de Paul serves a nutritionally balanced and delicious hot meal every day at lunch in its Dining Room. We would like to have ten volunteers each day to assist on the serving line to serve our guests. A volunteer must be eighteen years of age to serve food in the Dining Room. The commitment of time is from 11 AM until 1 PM. After the last guest is served at 1 PM, we invite our volunteers to stay and have lunch with us.

As guests exit the dining room of St. Vincent de Paul, they are offered items from which they can choose to put in a bag and take with them. For most guests, this is their evening snack or meal. We would like to have four volunteers each day to assist by overseeing the distribution of items of choice for guests as they exit the dining room. Minors may distribute Bags of Hope to guests. A minor MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. Additionally, a Minor Volunteer Waiver must be printed, completed, signed by the parent and brought on the day of service. You may print the waiver from Galaxy Digital. Please give it to the person in charge of the dining room on the day you come to volunteer. The commitment of time is from 11 AM until 1 PM. The Day Shelter of St. Vincent de Paul located at 1623 Convention Street in Baton Rouge is where the women, men and children that sleep in the Sweet Dreams and Sweet Dreams Expansion Shelters of St. Vincent de Paul at night go during the daytime hours. 

Participants learn life skills like money management, how to prepare for a job interview, computer skills to seek employment online, healthy living tips, etc. They break for lunch; and, most often a hot meal is delivered form the Dining Room to the guests in the Day Shelter. Sometimes we are blessed to have a Manna Giver prepare a meal at home (or purchase a meal) and bring it to the participants in the Day Shelter. This is such a blessing to St. Vincent de Paul because the money saved by a Manna Giver providing a meal can be used for other important things.

We ask that the meal include a meat or protein, vegetable and a starch. Desserts and beverages are optional and we provide the paper goods.
