The Plank Road Men's Shelter is now located at 220 St. Vincent de Paul Place in Baton Rouge provides shelter for men in need of a safe place while attempting to gain independence.

Manna Givers are the lifeblood of the shelters. We are so very grateful to the individuals and groups that take their valuable time and resources to purchase or prepare a delicious meal for the participants in the shelters. Participants are heartened that strangers are willing to go to great lengths to sustain them in such a generous and loving way.

-Meals should include one meat, one vegetable, and one starch

-Desserts and beverages are optional

Please enter from Florida Boulevard and St. Vincent de Paul Place. Park in the dining room parking lot, which faces Florida Boulevard and is enclosed by a black wrought iron fence. Use the only door accessible from this parking lot, which leads directly into the dining room where male participants receive their evening meal.

This protocol applies whether you are dropping off the meal or staying to serve. The Night Manager is available to assist with retrieving the meal from your vehicle using a cart.

Volunteers assist on the serving line, helping distribute meals to our neighbors in a respectful and welcoming environment. This role helps ensure that guests are served efficiently and with dignity.

Assist neighbors in selecting items for their Bags of Hope

Ensure smooth distribution and a welcoming experience

The Day Shelter of St. Vincent de Paul located at 1623 Convention Street in Baton Rouge is where the women, men and children that sleep in the Sweet Dreams and Sweet Dreams Expansion Shelters of St. Vincent de Paul at night go during the daytime hours. 

Participants learn life skills like money management, how to prepare for a job interview, computer skills to seek employment online, healthy living tips, etc. They break for lunch; and, most often a hot meal is delivered form the Dining Room to the guests in the Day Shelter. Sometimes we are blessed to have a Manna Giver prepare a meal at home (or purchase a meal) and bring it to the participants in the Day Shelter. This is such a blessing to St. Vincent de Paul because the money saved by a Manna Giver providing a meal can be used for other important things.

We ask that the meal include a meat or protein, vegetable and a starch. Desserts and beverages are optional and we provide the paper goods. We encourage you to stay and serve the meal to the participants and have fellowship with them. If you choose to do this, please bring enough food for your volunteers to enjoy as well.

We would like to limit the number of volunteers to ten. Minors MUST be accompanied by an adult to volunteer.  A group of six minors may be accompanied by an adult that is certified to work around vulnerable populations. We ask that the Manna Giver arrive at the Day Shelter of St. Vincent de Paul with the meal at 10:45 AM. If you plan to drop off your meal, the drop off location is located at 1623 Convention Street. Pull up on the concrete slab in front of the black wrought iron gate, enter the gate and knock on the single glass door. The Day Manager will come with a cart to retrieve the meal. If you are staying to serve the meal, you should park behind the pharmacy on the circular drive close to the black wrought iron gate. Whether dropping off the meal or staying to serve the meal, Day Shelter Manna Givers coming on Saturdays and Sundays should phone the Day Shelter Manager to tell them you are on the premises so that they can come with a cart and assist you with the meal. You can call the Volunteer Coordinator at 225-383-7837, ext. 201 to get the telephone number of the weekend Day Shelter Manager.
